What Makes a Monitor Sunlight Readable?

Monitor brightness is measured in nits, also expressed as candelas per square meter (cd/m²), the two units are identical, so 1,000 nits equals 1,000 cd/m². While a standard desktop monitor typically produces 250–350 nits, 1,000 nits is the recommended minimum for use in direct sunlight, helping keep images and text visible when bright ambient light would wash out a conventional display.

Brightness is only part of the equation, especially for touchscreens. Anti-glare treatments diffuse reflected light to soften glare, while anti-reflective treatments reduce the amount of light reflected from the screen’s surface. These treatments help improve visibility and complement a high-brightness panel for outdoor use. TRU-Vu offers sunlight-readable monitors in sizes from 8″ to 55″, with or without touchscreen capabilities, with automated ambient light sensors available on all models, providing options for outdoor equipment, industrial systems, kiosks, and other demanding applications.
