Optically Bonded Monitors

What Is Optical Bonding?

Optical bonding is the process of permanently bonding a protective glass or touchscreen layer directly to the front surface of an LCD using a clear optical-grade adhesive. This eliminates the air gap traditionally found between the display and cover glass. Without optical bonding, ambient light can reflect off multiple surfaces within the display assembly, creating glare and reducing image clarity. Optical bonding minimizes these reflections, resulting in a brighter, sharper, and easier-to-read image.

Optically Bonded Display Construction

  • Protective Cover Glass
  • Optical Bonding Layer (Optically Clear Adhesive)
  • LCD Panel
  • LED Backlight Assembly

By replacing the air gap with an optically clear adhesive, light passes more efficiently through the display, improving visibility and overall performance.

Benefits of Optically Bonded Monitors

Improved Sunlight Readability

Optical bonding can reduce internal reflections by up to 90%, significantly improving visibility in bright environments. This makes optically bonded displays ideal for outdoor kiosks, digital signage, military systems, marine applications, transportation equipment, and industrial machinery.

Increased Durability

The optical bonding process strengthens the display assembly by creating a solid, unified structure. This added rigidity helps protect against shock, vibration, and mechanical stress commonly found in industrial and mobile applications.

Eliminates Internal Condensation

Because the air gap is removed, moisture cannot become trapped between the glass and LCD panel. This greatly reduces the risk of internal fogging or condensation in humid environments and extreme temperature conditions.

Better Environmental Protection

Optical bonding helps prevent dust, dirt, and contaminants from entering the display assembly, increasing long-term reliability and reducing maintenance requirements

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary advantage of optical bonding?

The primary benefit is reduced reflections and improved image clarity, especially in high ambient light or outdoor environments.

Is optical bonding available on all TRU-Vu monitors?

Optical bonding is primarily a custom monitor offering. Many TRU-Vu monitors and touchscreens can be customized with optical bonding. Contact us to discuss your specific requirements.

Does optical bonding have any disadvantages?

Potentially, yes. Because the protective glass and LCD panel are permanently bonded together, they cannot be separated for individual replacement. As a result, if either the glass or the LCD panel becomes damaged, the entire bonded assembly must be replaced.
